Deepfakes - The Next Cyber Threat

January 12, 2021

Cyber analytics specialist CyberCube sees deepfake audio and video technologies as a major threat to businesses within the next two years.

As described in an article by Ryan Smith in Insurance Business America, the ability to create realistic audio and video fakes is growing steadily. Largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increasing number of audio and video samples of businesses and people online. Cyber criminals are using this data base to build realistic simulations. Existing deepfake technologies have been complemented by "mouth-mapping" to mimic mouth movements during speech. These technologies are feasible for all sizes of criminal organizations. They have been used in political campaigns and can be used against businesses and wealthy individuals. Social profiling is used to create fake identities.

Insurers will be considering the potential for large losses in reviewing their insureds' cyber security. As individuals, we will need a "zero trust" mentality and not believe any message before it is independently confirmed.
