The Biden administration and the EPA have warned governors of the risk of cyberattacks against water and wastewater systems throughout the United States. These attacks have the potential to disrupt the supply of clean and safe drinking water.
Since hackers are affiliated with China and Iran, this is a national security issue. Since water systems are local, the federal government can do little besides issue warnings.
Water systems are vulnerable because of weak controls, insufficient funding and staffing shortages. In many cases, basic cybersecurity precautions - resetting default passwords, updating software to fix vulnerabilities - are not followed.
